Each spring for the past few years I’ve been setting aside a weekend for a solo bike trip: book a campsite, put the bike on the rack, grab some wine and provisions on the way out of town and come back recharged in 36-48 hours.


Old lodges like Skytop help to remind you that picnics and hikes and long afternoons by a fire with a cocktail in hand are all crucial parts of the good life.


With young kids we try to strike a good balance between allowing for adventure and serendipity while also making sure we’re headed towards an interesting destination that they’ll be excited about visiting.
